On January 8th, the first Learning Sciences Institute Symposium was held.

Under the theme "The Future of Education in the Era of Generative AI," Professors Ryan Baker from the University of Pennsylvania and Mutlu Cukurova from University College London attended in person to deliver informative lectures.

Professor Ryan Baker, the inaugural president of the International Educational Data Mining Society and currently the head of the Penn Center for Learning Analytics, continues his active research, including the development of models that utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) to detect student engagement in online learning environments. At the symposium, he shared case studies of educational research using large language models and discussed how artificial intelligence should be utilized in future education.

Professor Mutlu Cukurova is currently serving as a Professor of Learning and Artificial Intelligence at UCL (University College London) and is the editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Educational Technology. He is actively researching ways to effectively address the educational challenges we will face in future societies that include AI systems. During the symposium, he lectured on how to apply a human-centered approach to education to overcome the limitations of the current AI development and utilization paradigm.
